A diverting occupation for the mind; a diversion; amusement: Solving the daily crossword puzzle is entertainment for many. Something affording pleasure, diversion, or amusement: a ball, a circus act, a play. A hospitable provision for the needs and wants of guests.

Entertainment often hits on themes the brain was evolved to deeply react to, such as backstabbing and murders and other things that require social interaction. The stimulation causes the brain to release seratonin and dopamine allowing the consumer to feel good.

Bates and Ferri (2010) define Entertainment as any activity understood objectively that encompasses communication between text and audience from an external stimulus, offers pleasure, requires an audience to exist and occurs in a passive form. Frequently abbreviated entmt on fliers, in industry news publications and in short hand note taking.
